Squeaky

Squeaky is a dramatic comedy that explores belonging, the impact of media, and the ubiquity of true crime by drawing parallels between each Trudeau prime ministerial era. Nanette Susan Cromme grew up in a series of foster homes. Of great intelligence and few social skills, she inserts herself into any conversation within earshot, swiftly making no friends at all.

The name Squeaky is a nod to one of the women who belonged to the infamous cult of Charles Manson. The play takes place in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Manson murders are all over the news and Pierre Elliott Trudeau is elected as Canada’s prime minister. Squeaky consumes the Manson trials through the media and becomes obsessed with the women who belong to that cult. The play examines how the media shapes our internal narratives, and how the system fails Indigenous foster kids.
